Influence of Paclobutrazol on Carbohydrate , Mineral Nutrition , and Fruit Quality of ¢¥ Fuji ¢¥ Apple Trees

Abstract
Paclobutrazol was treated to the 12-year old `Fuji¢¥/seedling apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees twice in late August and early December 1983, and once in late March 1985 into the soil and on the trunk bark at the concentration of 2¡8g ai per tree. Paclobutrazol reduced shoot growth, but increased the size of fruiting buds. Carbohydrates of shoot leaves and woods were increased, but those of fruiting buds were decreased. Ca content of shoot leaves increased, but N, P, K, and Mg were not affected by paclobutrazol. Fruit firmness increased at harvest by paclobutrazol, but the effect disappeared one month after air storage. Soluble solids and total acidity of fruits were not changed. Soil and trunk bark applications of paclobutrazol showed similar effects on the observed characteristics. Although paclobutrazol retarded shoot growth with increased concentrations, the effectiveness on the fruiting bud size, carbohydrate level, mineral element content, and fruit firmness were not increased in proportion to the concentrations of paclobutrazol.
